I’ve been really lucky lately to work with such talented dancers.

Sarah knew what she was doing, and was a pleasure to be around. I think we got some really great photos as well!

Sarah Baumgras Dance session.

Organized by Juliet Bennett-Rylah. Great 80′s cover show. I got to set up lighting, which was awesome, except that I broke an sb-600.

It was to raise money for the Eastown Business Association.

Artpeers edition. Sort of.

A little less contrast this time than normal, I guess I wasn’t feeling the flowing black shadows and glowing white highlights.

These ones just feel a bit softer, maybe it’s the mood I’m in.

New additions to the smoking series.

This slideshow includes all the photos I’ve taken for the project so far. It’s about time I post an update doing that.

Make sure to check them out large.

This was one of my toughest shoots ever. I was backstage, so the stage lights were pointed straight at me, which made auto focusing impossible. It was also quite dark.

My camera was loud. The offstage dancers could hear it from the other side of the stage.

I showed up wearing white, not having thought that if I was going to be backstage, I needed to wear black.

On the way there, I got in a little bike accident, and really messed up my ankle.

All that said, I still think I got some great photos. The show was amazing.

Johanna was more concerned with her form and having her toes and fingertips in the frame than having the lighting right or perfect composition (as I was). So, we got together and discussed that, and she picked out her favorite photos. These are them.

I really learned a lot in our conversation, I now know quite well what a dancer looks for in pictures of themselves.

This proved difficult tonight, when I was shooting a recital in full manual, right down to the focus (the lighting was really tricky). I had so many things on my mind.

Kind of self portrait

Some photos of Paul Jendrasiak, who was nice enough to pose for me while I figured a few things out, and a shot of myself that I had my dad help me out with, while I gave him a little photo lesson.

Justin, Tressa (2), and Alexis.

The girl in the last last photo, Alexis, whom I’ve seen but never talked to, wore a black dress into 76 coffee today and I thought it looked nice, so I asked if I could take a photo for the smoking set. While outside, I asked if anyone else wanted to be a part, and Tressa was game. Having my camera already in my hand when Justin showed up, I asked if he minded as well.

I had to post 2 of Tressa, because I really loved the sitting back shot with her hand on her leg, but her eyes were closed, and I couldn’t pass up how glassy her eyes were.

a few more for the smoking series

It’s been a while since I’ve posted photos as a slideshow.

I’m still shooting dancers as often as I can, as a portrait photographer, I love the subjects, and as an artist, I love the lines.

I think shooting dance is challenging, there is so much fast movement, so many angles to shoot from, and it’s really hard to work around a bunch of people in an awkwardly lit room with mirrors on one side and windows on another.

I owe a big thanks to Dance in the Annex, especially Amy Wilson, for allowing me to work along side them. I love the collaboration, and they have been providing me with amazing photo opportunities, as well as something fun to do.
